Renewed Hope: Nigeria’s Turbulenced Economy is unlike that of Venezuela
"We want to state categorically that though our country is going through some rough patches, which are being addressed by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, our situation is nowhere near what is happening in Venezuela!"
— President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu’s administration on Tuesday said the opposition’s comparison of Nigeria’s economy with that of troubled Venezuela is unfair and inaccurate.
The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, said that although the Nigerian economy was going through challenges, comparing it to that of Venezuela, by governors elected on the platform of the main opposition party, PDP, was unfair.
“We want to state categorically that though our country is going through some rough patches, which are being addressed by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, our situation is nowhere near what is happening in Venezuela,” Mr Idris wrote in a statement shared with PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday.
“The Nigerian economy is still very strong and is expected to record a 3% GDP growth this year. The economy is meeting financial obligations to lenders at home and abroad.”
The PDP governors after their meeting on Monday lamented the economic and security situation across the country and proffered some solutions such as the establishment of state police to address the security challenges in many states.
“We welcome their call for a bipartisan approach to solving our nation’s economic and security problems,” Mr Idris wrote before accusing the PDP governors of contributing to the economic crisis.”
