The Aftermath of Atiku/Obi Vs Tinubu's Supreme Court Verdict: Atiku should heed to Nigerians' Call to Retire While the Ovation is still Louder

“... those who don't know history are bound to be repeating same mistake.”

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 25, 2023 presidential election, former vice president Atiku Abubakar, says he will not leave the political arena despite the Supreme Court verdict of October 26, 2023 that affirmed the electoral victory of President Bola Tinubu. Perhaps no one is denying Atiku Abubakar, his constitutional right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, neither should he be disfranchised of his constitutional right of voting and be voted for. Nonetheless, only Atiku reserved the discretion to continue vying for any elective office of the land, and for as many times as he deems fit. If Atiku Abubakar decided to keep contesting for Nigeria's President till thy kingdom come, so be it.

But, however, while exercising his right, Atiku Abubakar should also heed to the popular Nigerians' voices that are beckoning him to leave the political arena while the ovation is still louder. Is the former vice president Atiku suffering from an acute amnesia of African's political history? If not, your guess is as good as mine. Yet, he should also know better than becoming the Nigeria's version of Raila Amolo Dinga. To folks who are good students of political history must have came across the Odinga's scenario. Raila Odinga's is fanatically obsession with becoming the Kenyan president, just like his Nigeria's cotraveller, Mr Atiku Abubakar.

Atiku Abubakar may be the Nigeria's political namesake of Raila Odinga. Mr Odinga, a Kenyan businessman and politician who served as prime minister of Kenya (2008–13) following the contentious presidential election of December 2007. In 1997 Odinga stood unsuccessfully as the NDP’s candidate for election as president of Kenya but was able to retain his seat in the National Assembly. He and the NDP thereafter gave their support to Moi and the ruling Kikuyu-dominated Kenya African National Union (KANU).

Odinga’s hope of succeeding Moi as KANU’s candidate for the presidency in the 2002 elections was shattered when Moi called upon the party to support Uhuru Kenyatta, son of former president Jomo Kenyatta. Several KANU members, including Odinga, formed the Rainbow Alliance within the party in protest of the choice, and they instead advocated for a vote among KANU members to determine the party’s presidential candidate. Their pleas went unheeded, and KANU officially named Kenyatta as its candidate a few months later; in response, Odinga and the Rainbow Alliance left KANU and formed the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

To this end, let us draw the curtain with the popular saying, those who don't know history are bound to be repeating same mistake.
