DR. BETTA EDU: a Kaleidoscope of Quintessential Women By Hon. Yazid Inuwa MK 11 Sep., 2023

The history of Nigeria's women is void without the mention of Queen Amina of Zaria, the first woman to become the Sarauniya (queen) in a male-dominated society during her reign between 1576 to 1610. Some of the Nigeria's quintessential women have etched their names in marbles, made their times felt, and left their footprints in the sand-of-times, for the next generation and the generation yet unborn, to be emulated.

Dr. Betta Edu, the Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, can ironically be described as a kaleidoscopic view of Agbani Darego, the first woman from Nigeria and Africa to win the Miss World crown.

Dr. Betta Edu demonstrates some qualities of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, an activist, teacher, political campaigner, and founder of the Nigerian Women's Union; Margaret Ekpo, Nigeria's first female political activist, credited with helping women insert themselves into the First Republic.

Dr. Betta, also reflects Kofo Ademola, the first Nigerian woman to get an undergraduate degree from the Oxford University; and Elizabeth Abimbola Awoliyi, the first female physician to practice in Nigeria, and also the first West African woman to earn a license of Royal Surgeon in Dublin.
She is the Adetowun Ogunsheye of our time. Ogunsheye was the Nigeria's first female professor and the first female dean of a faculty, amongst others.
